George Lucas to Donate Disney Money to Education
Sure he may have defiled your childhood with the likes of Jar-Jar Binks, but George Lucas has once again proven that he’s not really a bad guy by stating he’ll donate a majority of the more than 4 billion dollars he received from selling off LucasFilm. After the news broke Tuesday that Disney would purchase LucasFilm and bring us episodes 7-9 of the Star Wars saga, people were appropriately skeptical. Some cried foul and levied that the deal was a product of Lucas’ own selfish desires, but this move seems to put those fears to bed.
A spokesperson for LucasFilm told THR, “George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of his proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.” There’s no confirmation of which charity the money will go to, but there are reports that it will be education-focused, and Lucas is currently the chairman of education charity, Edutopia.
The LucasFilm spokesman also said that this donation, “continues a commitment that [George] Lucas made in 2010 to The Giving Pledge where he stated, “I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future—and the first step begins with social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children.’”
Sounds like a stand-up guy to us. What do you think of Lucas donating all this money to charity?
