Hotel Charges $500 Fee for Bad Reviews?!

The Union Street Guest House in Hudson, NY has become the new target for trolls on Yelp! after it was reported that the hotel was threatening to charge guests a $500 fee for giving them bad reviews.

The issue came to light after the hotel reportedly came through on their insane policy of charging guests or their companions a $500 fee for bad Yelp! reviews. The policy on their site reads:

“If your guests are looking for a Marriott type hotel they may not like it here. Therefore: If you have booked the Inn for a wedding or other type of event anywhere in the region and given us a deposit of any kind for guests to stay at USGH there will be a $500 fine that will be deducted from your deposit for every negative review of USGH placed on any internet site by anyone in your party and / or attending your wedding or event.”

A couple came forward saying that the hotel actually attempted to follow through on their policy. You can imagine how that went for them:

The hotel has since claimed that the whole thing was a big joke saying that the policy was put in as a result of “a tongue-in-cheek response to a wedding many years ago.”

However, old reviews from guests who have been threatened say other wise. At any rate, their Yelp! rating would probably be in the negative if that were even possible.
