This week, the Supreme Court is set to hear both sides of the argument for California’s Prop 8 and DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).
If DOMA were to be struck down, many social benefits open up to millions of Americans.
If DOMA were to be repealed, same-sex couples would have access to higher Social Security benefits as well as 30% would receive better retirement benefits. Also, Same-sex couple’s health benefits would become taxable income, which could save at least 71 private companies money every year.
Military personnel would have access to medical benefits. Couples with one partner who is an immigrant could petition for immigration benefits.Federal employees would have access to health insurance. The list goes on and on.
Repealing DOMA would help a millions of Americans and I hope that the members of the Supreme court can see this as well.
People who are in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act being repealed have been stationed outside the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. for days now. Check out a few of their amazing signs.
