Early this morning, a man attacked 22 children and an elderly woman with a knife outside a elementary school in the village of Chengping, China.
No one was killed, but 9 of the children are being hospitalized and 2 had to be airlifted to a more well-equipped hospital.
The knife-wielding attacker has been identified as Min Yingjun, a 36-year-old villager who is now in police custody.
A Guangshan county hospital administrator stated that Yingjin first attacked the elderly woman and then the children before he was arrested.
The security guard who detained Yingjin is part of a protective measure the Chinese government put in to place due to a string of attacks on kindergartens and elementary schools over the past three years.
In 2010, nearly 20 children were killed and 50 were wounded due to similar situations. Also, in August of this year, a man broke into a middle school and stabbed two students before fleeing.
A majority of the attackers have been male Chinese citizens who have a personal vendetta against the victim or are unable to adjust to the rapid social changes that China is currently facing. Not being able to properly diagnose and treat psychiatric illnesses is one of the main challenges the Chinese health care program has to deal with.
