Dark Souls 2 And The Phantom Pain

Dark Souls 2 And The Phantom Pain

Today, we’re pretty jam packed with nerd info. We’ve got Star Trek gear that works and you can buy it, the Dark Souls 2 trailer to tempt you into giving up your life once again, and a possible Metal Gear Solid V video. It’s Nerd Porn, strap it on.

Star Trek’s Medical Tricorder: It’s Real

Yeah, Walter de Brouwer wanted to create a low-cost medical scanning device that works so simply even non-medical personnel could understand what’s going on. When his kid landed in the ICU, he became very, very annoyed with the complicated equipment. So he started tinkering and came up with this beauty:

It’s called the Scanadu SCOUT. You press it up to your left temple, and within seconds, will get a load of data, including:

  • Heart Rate
  • Temperature
  • Electrical Heart Activity
  • Blood Oxygenation

Oh, and how do you see this information? With your phone. Yup, you pair it up with your iPhone or Android smartphone and it’ll beam the data straight to you.

It’s going to be out next year and it’s going to cost about $150. Yup. We live in the future. The SCOUT and all of their other super cool devices are over here.

Dark Souls 2 Trailer

My best friend almost died playing Dark Souls. It is the ultimate time sink: a mix of dungeon crawling, PvP that pretty much encourages griefing, and a storyline that straddles the border between “nonexistent” and “irrelevant.”

Now, the sequel has a trailer out:

The Phantom Pain: Metal Gear Solid V?

So, at the Video Game Awards, Konami released a very weird trailer:

People are starting to piece things together like they’re playing an ARG, but there seems to be some consensus that this is a trailer for Metal Gear Solid V. The title card says The Phantom Pain, but not too many people believe it’s a new IP. Characters in this trailer look a lot some in the MGS canon, and the ridiculous flaming whale ship at the end seems to nail that over-the-top part-anime, part-24 style of action.

People think the amputee in question is Big Boss, aka Naked Snake (why), but I have no idea how they’re getting that. I’ve been out of the game.

However, there’s a photo out showing how “Metal Gear Solid V” fits with the weird lines poking out of “The Phantom Pain.” If you’re into full on conspiracy-theory confirmation bias, here it is:

The original, if you don’t feel like scrubbing through the YouTube video:

It’s probably Metal Gear Solid V.

Question: What do you guys think about the trailer?
