Miss New York was crowned Miss America over the weekend, and is the first Indian-American woman to wear the crown.
While some are elated for Nina Davuluri, others are downright hateful. Several racist tweets and posts have been highlighted regarding the win, with some stating that fan-favorite Theresa Vail is the “real” Miss America.
The problem with this viewpoint is that it goes against everything that Vail has claimed she stands for. Vail is someone who wanted to break barriers and provide a beacon of strength and hope for a younger generation.
It is breaking a barrier for Miss New York to have won, something in my opinion, I feel Vail would support.
The level of ignorance displayed by the American people who chose to voice their hatred for a woman who is American is not only disheartening, it’s sickening.
Some people even had the gall to bring up 9/11, while others called her a terrorist.
However, Miss New York is not of Arabian descent, she is Indian and has never been connected to any terrorist organizations.
Who she is as a person is what matters, not her skin tone.
It’s 2013. We should be above this.
What do you think about the whole debacle?
