Why Samuel Madrid Says Moissanite Has Earned Its Place as a Fine Jewelry Category

Published on

Moissanite carries the name of Henri Moissan, the French chemist who first identified the mineral in meteorite fragments. Natural moissanite is so scarce that the gemstones set in jewelry today are created in laboratories. Chemically, the stone is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond, which is pure carbon.

Samuel Madrid, founder of Miami The Jeweler in downtown Miami, argues that moissanite should be judged as a fine jewelry category on its own terms. His shop sells moissanite and diamond, and his case for one stone does not depend on knocking down the other. It rests on the gemstone’s measured properties, the standard a jeweler sets for it and the quality of the piece the customer takes home.

A gemstone with its own optical profile

Gemologists describe a stone’s sparkle in terms of how it bends and splits light. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond and greater dispersion, which gives it exceptional brilliance and strong fire. Those figures come from gemological measurement, and they hold for moissanite regardless of who sells it.

Miami The Jeweler describes the look of its own stones with care. The shop uses VVS1, D-color moissanite exclusively, and it says that standard produces a crisp, colorless appearance with bright white brilliance as well as colorful fire. The shop avoids the shorthand that reduces moissanite to color play and diamond to whiteness, because a well-cut D-color stone shows both brilliance and fire.

Durability supports the case. Diamond scores 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and moissanite sits at about 9.25, which places it among the hardest gemstones used in jewelry. That hardness makes it a practical choice for everyday wear with proper care. It does not make the stone indestructible, and the shop does not claim otherwise.

Grades applied as a production standard

Sellers describe moissanite with the same color and clarity vocabulary used for diamond. On that scale, D marks the top of the colorless range. VVS1 means very, very slightly included, with any inclusions extremely difficult for a trained grader to see even under 10x magnification.

Miami The Jeweler treats those grades as a floor for its moissanite line. The shop has found, through its own sourcing and production, that D color across every stone gives a long chain or a fully iced pendant the uniform, colorless look it wants. Madrid presents that as a production choice drawn from the shop’s experience. He does not present it as a law of gemology, and he does not use it as a charge against anyone else’s stones.

The finished piece decides the category’s reputation

Madrid’s core argument concerns what happens after the stone is chosen. A gemstone can be excellent while the jewelry around it is mediocre. Bulky prongs can crowd the stones. Uneven spacing can break the line of a tennis chain. A weak clasp or thin construction can make a striking piece feel flimsy in the hand.

For a category to earn a place in fine jewelry, in his view, jewelers have to hold it to fine jewelry standards: precise setting with small, clean prongs, consistent alignment and spacing, substantial construction, appropriate weight, strong finishing and plating, and quality control on the completed piece. At Miami The Jeweler, a piece that misses that bar gets melted down and started over.

Madrid’s general advice to anyone building a business applies to the craft as well. “No matter what you do, just make sure you learn how to do it better than anyone else,” he says.

Accurate names build trust in the stone

A gemstone category gains standing when sellers name it accurately. Miami The Jeweler represents each material as what it is. Moissanite is sold as moissanite, lab-grown diamond as lab-grown diamond and natural diamond as natural diamond. The shop’s core moissanite collection is set in 925 sterling silver, and its yellow-finish pieces are described as 18K gold-plated 925 sterling silver rather than as gold jewelry.

That precision matters to Madrid’s argument. A buyer who knows exactly what they bought can judge moissanite on its merits, which is the only footing the category needs.

Room for diamond in the same case

Treating moissanite seriously does not require a verdict against diamond. Diamond carries prestige, rarity, history, material value and long tradition. Miami The Jeweler sets natural and lab-grown diamonds in solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold for customers who value those qualities.

Moissanite offers a different mix: extraordinary brilliance, strong durability, and more stone coverage and design flexibility for the money. Madrid’s position is that customers should choose based on what they value, and that both categories deserve the same discipline at the bench.

The shop’s moissanite and diamond collections are on view at 22 NE First St, Suite 225, in downtown Miami, and online through the shop’s collections.
