What Are 3 Early Signs of Cerebral Palsy?

Published on

Cerebral palsy is a disorder of movement, muscle tone, or posture that is caused by damage to the developing brain. It affects an individual’s ability to control their movements and can cause physical disabilities in children or adults. Early identification of cerebral palsy is important for providing interventions and treatments to help affected individuals lead normal lives.

The early signs of cerebral palsy are varied and can be difficult to identify in infants and young children. These are some of the most common signs that may indicate a child is developing cerebral palsy:

1. Delayed Motor Development

Motor skills, such as rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and walking may be delayed in a child with cerebral palsy. Motor skills should develop naturally, and if they are not developing as expected, it could be an indication that something is wrong. The doctor should be informed if there are any delays in motor development.

2. Abnormal Muscle Tone

Muscles may appear too stiff or too floppy in an infant or young child who has cerebral palsy. When held upright, the infant’s body may be rigid and straight or floppy, instead of curved in a C-shape. There may also be a tendency for the affected limb to become stiff when moved.

3. Unusual Reflexes

Involuntary movements, such as jerking motions or muscles that contract when touched, could indicate cerebral palsy in an infant or young child. These reflexes may be exaggerated or absent completely. When reflexes are unusual, it is important to bring this to the attention of a child’s doctor.

If you suspect your child may have cerebral palsy, it is important to medical help as soon as possible in order to get an accurate diagnosis and the appropriate treatments. Early intervention can make a big difference in helping children with cerebral palsy lead normal lives.
