How Different Industries Are Handling Drug Use Legislation

Published on

Employment drug testing laws have become a hot topic, especially in recent years with the further legalization of many drugs, namely the recreational and medical use of marijuana. Last year, more than 500 bills related to drug testing were introduced, looking to crack down on the use of drugs in the workplace. Despite these drugs being legal in many states, their use can cause a major issue, especially in safety-centered workplaces and industries. For example, marijuana is now legal for recreational use in over 20 states and is legal for medical use in nearly 40. Subsequently, positive marijuana tests have increased by 45.2% over the past five years.

To ensure that workers can do their jobs safely, many employers are cracking down. Through drug testing and anti-cheating policies, many states are mitigating the risk that these substances may pose to workers in certain industries. To ensure accurate results and regulation, industries like energy, transportation, manufacturing, trade, and construction are already implementing anti-cheating policies. These policies are keeping people safe and will ensure that high-risk employees are prepared for their workday while remaining compliant with new and evolving legislation surrounding drug use.
