When a person sleeps in, the body can rest. As mundane and unrealistic as it sounds, sleeping longer occasionally is highly recommended by doctors. When a person allows additional time for the body to rest and heal, it can be very beneficial to a person. Of course, Ken Kurson doesn’t recommend missing important tasks because of sleeping in, but it should be allowed every once in a while. When a person sleeps in the body has time to do many things. For example, the sympathetic nervous system can relax. This controls what psychologists call flight or fight response. When a person is exhausted, the activity in the sympathetic nervous system increases which is why blood pressure increases. In addition, during extra sleep, the REM sleep cycle is activated. Also, when a person is dreaming the body becomes temporarily paralyzed. 

When people rest, their bodies have time to clear toxins and in a way, restart the brain. When we dream that is usually a sign that our mind is stressed out. In addition, insomnias and headaches are an indication that the body needs rest. There are fewer demands on one’s heart when a person sleeps. The blood pressure in a person’s body usually drops and the hearts can stop pumping so fast. It’s basically like the operative of going on a run. Instead of the body pumping heavy amounts of oxygen into the brain and body, their heart has time to relax and calm down. The body also releases hormones when a person is at rest that relax the muscles and reduce inflammation. Ever weigh yourself in the morning versus the end of the day? That is because the body has usually digested the food a person ate by the time they wake up. 

As long as a person is getting eight to nine hours of sleep, their bodies should be well maintained. For those who struggle with sleeping in general it’s important to see a specialist. Many people put off seeing a sleep specialist because they don’t have time. However, for people like Ken Kurson it’s very important to get checked out. The best way to help with insomnia is to stay active. Exercise really helps with snoring and also sleeping fully throughout the night. Going on walks can really help a person feel better and maintain a calmer aroma. By avoiding naps, especially during the day, our bodies can be more exhausted at night which helps with formulating a more definite sleep schedule. Melatonin can be a temporary fix but should not be taken every night. If the body starts relying on melatonin, there can be serious issues that lie ahead. Lately by avoiding big meals before bed, a person can sleep better. If the body has less digestion to work on, it can rest much faster and better. The quality of sleep a person gets really depends on the activities they do during the day. Overall, sleeping in is recommended occasionally, but not in any way that can be harmful to a healthy sleep schedule.
