How Narcissists Create Toxic Households

narcissistic personality disorder

A deeply ingrained pattern of self-centeredness, entitlement, arrogance, and lack of empathy is known as narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) among professionals. Although everyone has the capabilities to show these behaviors from time to time, it is fundamental to a narcissist’s core personality. Experts estimate that up to 1 out of 6 people may have narcissistic tendencies, even though only around 1% of people have a formal diagnosis. This means that on average, there is a narcissist in 1 of every 2 households.

A household with a narcissist can easily slip into a toxic environment. They create dynamics between family members plagued by poor communication, secrecy, emotional manipulation, and a lack of boundaries. After many years of this abuse, their spouses and family members can develop long-term mental health effects such as self-loathing, distrust of others, and even substance abuse.

When family members finally decide to escape from the clutches of a narcissist, they must carefully plan their exit. It is recommended that they separate finances into a different account, change contact information, and determine child custody before leaving – all without alerting the narcissist to their plans. Family and friends, a lawyer, or even the authorities, can be incredible support systems during this tremulous period.
