CBD oil is a product that contains cannabidiol (CBD), a compound from the cannabis plant. To make CBD oil, the cannabidiol compound is extracted from the cannabis plant and mixed with a carrier oil, such as hemp seed or coconut oil. CBD oil is available in three different concentrations or formulations:

  • Isolate. CBD isolates are pure CBD, with no other ingredients from the cannabis plant.
  • Broad-spectrum. Broad-spectrum CBD products contain CBD plus all other components of the cannabis plant except tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the active ingredient that causes the high associated with marijuana.
  • Full-spectrum. Full-spectrum CBD products contain all the components of the cannabis plant, including a very small amount of THC.

Is CBD Legal?

The FDA has already approved one prescription medication that contains CBD: Epidiolex. Additionally, the 2018 Farm Bill reclassified cannabis and cannabis derivatives with less than 0.3% THC as hemp, and they no longer fall under the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). However, there are still federal regulations regarding how CBD oil can be marketed and sold in interstate commerce. Individual states have also passed their own laws regarding CBD products.

Is CBD Safe?

With the exception of full-spectrum products, CBD oil does not contain any THC, and even broad-spectrum CBD doesn’t contain enough THC to have a psychoactive effect. The side effects reported with CBD use are generally mild, such as fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, and irritability. However, CBD can interact with certain medications and supplements, much in the same way that grapefruit juice does.

Many people take CBD oil to help with migraines, arthritis, and other sources of chronic pain. Others use it for mental health conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and depression or to treat symptoms of cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and epilepsy. For some, CBD oil helps alleviate insomnia, asthma, or nausea.

Where is CBD Oil Available?

You can find pure, natural CBD oil online. In some states, it is also available in brick-and-mortar stores. You will find a variety of products, concentrations, and brands to choose from. Although you do not need a prescription to get CBD oil, your doctor may be able to recommend the right product for your needs and can explain any potential benefits, side effects, and interactions.

If you’re interested in trying CBD oil, you’re in good company. Consumer interest in CBD oil has risen dramatically in recent years, and experts don’t expect that trend to slow down anytime soon. With a bit of research and a discussion with your doctor, you can decide if CBD oil is a good fit for you.
